Who is PIGNUS?
Association of Collateral Loan and Social Credit Institutions. It brings together institutions, banks, and foundations whose roots lie in the “Monti di Pietà”, which emerged in Italy in the 15th century. In contrast to the typical Anglo-Saxon model, which is primarily focused on profit maximization, PIGNUS preserves the original Christian vision of credit, which aims to combat usury, help families in need, and promote financial inclusion.
Our members
PIGNUS currently has 22 full members, including two national associations (which together represent 20 organizations), as well as five institutions with observer status. PIGNUS is represented in 21 countries across North and South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Our members issue approximately 50 million secured loans each year.
More information about PIGNUS
The Collateral Loan
Pawnbroking is a form of secured financing in which a valuable item is temporarily deposited as collateral for a loan. It is a fast and discreet solution that allows you to access immediate cash without giving up ownership of your asset, with the option to redeem it within an agreed time frame.
Our Auctions
Pignus members organize over 1,000 auctions each year, offering a wide selection of valuable items, all carefully described and appraised by experts. These public auctions are open to everyone and ensure a transparent sales process. Starting from an attractive opening bid, the highest bid wins—creating value for both buyers and pawnbrokers.
Our History
At the end of the Middle Ages, Franciscan monks in Italy promoted the establishment of the “Mons Pietatis,” institutions that provided loans secured by collateral. In doing so, they laid the foundations for modern banking and created one of the earliest forms of social and Catholic credit systems. They made financing accessible to all social classes and, through this system, contributed to both social and economic development.
